AISI 316

Molybdenum-bearing Stainless Steel

Material Overview

AISI 316 - Molybdenum-bearing Stainless Steel

Material Type

Type: Austenitic with molybdenum addition

Key Benefit: Superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance

Corrosion Resistance

Exceptional Performance: Superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chlorides (sea water, chemicals, de-icing salts). Molybdenum content provides enhanced resistance to reducing acids and chloride-ion solutions.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: 515-750 MPa
Yield Strength: 205-310 MPa
Hardness: ~200 HB
Creep Strength: High at elevated temperatures

Applications

  • Marine shafts and hardware (coastal/offshore)
  • Chemical processing plants and equipment
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing machines
  • Pumps and valves for corrosive media
  • Food processing equipment (acidic environments)
  • Pulp and paper industry equipment
  • Heat exchangers and condensers
  • Textile processing equipment

Advantages

  • Marine Grade: Excellent resistance to saltwater corrosion
  • Chemical Resistance: Superior performance in acidic environments
  • High Temperature: Better creep and stress-rupture properties
  • Pitting Resistance: Molybdenum prevents localized corrosion
  • Versatility: Suitable for wide range of aggressive environments

Processing Characteristics

  • Welding: Good weldability, similar to 304
  • Formability: Excellent cold forming properties
  • Machinability: Good, work-hardens during cutting
  • Heat Treatment: Solution annealing at 1040-1150°C
